Tara Roberts

National Geographic Explorer

Meet Tara Roberts.

Raised by an educator and surrounded by books, Tara developed a passion for uncovering history and bringing stories to life—interests that ultimately led her to become a writer, storyteller and National Geographic Explorer. Through her work exploring shipwrecks tied to the transatlantic slave trade, Tara transforms history from something read about into something experienced, helping educators and students connect with the past in powerful, tangible ways. As the first Black woman Explorer featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine, she continues to broaden representation in exploration and discovery. By blending immersive storytelling with real‑world investigation, Tara inspires learners to view history as active, relevant and deeply connected to the world—and to imagine how curiosity and courage can shape meaningful, purpose‑driven careers.
