SAN ANTONIO, December 8, 2017 – Nearly 1,000 employees of Cengage, an education and technology company, gathered in San Antonio this week to help needy families locally and hurricane victims in Houston. The service event, timed to the company’s annual sales meeting, had employees pack 6,000 canned and boxed food items to support the Food Banks of San Antonio and Houston.

“At Cengage, we are committed to building positive change, both in our work to improve teaching and learning and in how we interact in the communities we serve,” said Michael Hansen, CEO. “I am continually impressed by the compassionate nature of our employees. In addition, I thank our partner FedEx for their generous support delivering these items to the food banks.”

Earlier this Fall, Cengage employees donated approximately $45,000 to aid hurricane and earthquake relief efforts. Several employees and their families were impacted by both natural disasters.

Anne Fry, a Cengage employee in Houston whose family was impacted by Hurricane Harvey, said, “I’ve been so inspired by the generosity of my colleagues. During Harvey, our leadership team rallied the entire company to support those of us in the affected regions. Because of this, I was able to focus entirely on the safety of my family and community during those difficult and devastating days. I am thrilled to work with my colleagues here in San Antonio to support my fellow Texans.”

“Hunger is often hidden in our communities. In the San Antonio region, 1 in 4 children and 1 in 5 adults will experience days when they will have no idea where their next meal will come from. Addressing hunger as a part of company events like this not only puts food on the table for those who cannot do it for themselves, it shines a light on those who lack power and social capital and are often voiceless. We want to thank Cengage for helping to set the table for the poorest of the poor and for helping give voice to their situation,” said Eric S. Cooper, President & CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank.

Seventy-five percent of the donated items will go to the Houston Food Bank as part of ongoing hurricane relief efforts; 25 percent of the items will be delivered to the San Antonio Food Bank. Cengage partnered with Impact4Good, a company that focuses on teambuilding community service programs. This is the second consecutive year that Cengage has supported the San Antonio community as part of its annual sales meeting.
