Cengage Invests in Codevolve to Help Students Learn Computer Programming

BOSTON and SAN FRANCISCO, October 18, 2018 – Cengage, an education and technology company, today announced an investment in Codevolve, a San Francisco-based technology company that delivers hands-on computer programming training. The investment will allow Cengage to expand its higher education computing courses and extend these offerings into the K-12 and continuing education markets.

“At Cengage, we are constantly looking at how we can advance the way students learn and help students acquire the skills they need for the jobs they want. Programming is a critical skill for our increasingly digital economy and we are excited for the opportunity to take the next step in our very successful partnership with Codevolve. By providing authentic, real-world learning experiences for students, they are better equipped to enter the workforce,” said Jonathan Lau, Senior Vice President, Skills Group, Cengage. “Further, this investment allows us to deliver more value for Cengage Unlimited subscribers, who can learn high-demand computing skills regardless of their course of study.”

Cengage Unlimited is the industry’s first all-access subscription for digital textbooks, access codes for online homework and study guides. Students pay one price to access more than 22,000 digital products across 70 disciplines and 675 courses – $119.99 per semester or $179.99 a year. Beginning in January, all Cengage Unlimited subscribers will have access to new programming language courses, including Python, Java and C++.

According to Burning Glass, nearly 7 million job openings in 2015 were roles that value the ability to write code and build computer programs. Codevolve, which is currently integrated into MindTap, the Cengage flagship digital platform, teaches students to code through a flexible cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE) that provides students with the hands-on practice, feedback and troubleshooting support they need to become a developer.

“Our mission at Codevolve is to make it easier for everyone to get involved with technology at many levels,” said Saul Costa, CEO of Codevolve. “As the need to understand how to code, build a website, or work with a database becomes increasingly ubiquitous, the way these important yet difficult subject areas are taught will need to continue to evolve. The expansion of our partnership with Cengage and their seven-figure investment into our growth will help us constantly deliver exceptional tools for learning these in-demand skills to their students and educators.”
