Jobs That Make a Difference: Account Executive

At Cengage Group, our mission-driven culture creates jobs that make a difference in the lives of learners. Working here means having a direct impact by helping students around the world discover the power and joy of learning. From Senior Media Producers to Software Engineering Managers, our people help give learners the choice in how, where and what they learn.

We spoke with Nancy M., Account Executive, about why she’s passionate about making a difference in education technology.

Nancy M Quote

How does your role and the work you do help students and learners?

I am part of the Higher Ed Sales division, where I specialize in selling content tailored to the fields of business, science, math, social sciences and humanities. I like to think of myself as a problem solver. I enjoy uncovering customer challenges and finding solutions. Within our Cengage Academic business, I work to make my customers’ lives easier. I work closely with faculty and students to make sure that they know how to use our products and have a good experience. I’m proud of the service I provide and that my customers view me as a partner.

What’s something you’re proud of that has impacted learners?

I am proud of the service I provide. I think it differentiates me from my competitors. My customers view me as a partner. Students and faculty are always so grateful when I’m able to help them solve their problem. I am also proud of my contributions to Cengage Group. My opinion is valued here and I can affect positive change.

What motivated you to work at Cengage Group and in edtech?

My mother was a sales rep for a publishing company, so I grew up watching her. She used to take me on work trips, and I thought it was such a fun job. I was thrilled to follow in her footsteps. I love the education technology space. I started with another publisher and was drawn to Cengage Group because the salary was more competitive. I have stayed for over 23 years because of the culture. Cengage Group cares about its people and about its customers.

Based on your experience, what’s the strongest element of Cengage Group’s culture?

The people here are caring and compassionate and are looking out for the good of each other and our customers. This was so evident when we gave everyone Cengage Unlimited for free at the start of the pandemic. It was awesome to be a part of and is an example of how Cengage Group works hard to do the right thing.

I also value the flexibility. I originally joined Cengage Group as a Field Sales Rep for Course Technology when the company was known as Thomson. I left when I had the first of my three children. I came back as a contractor about a year later to work as an Associate Product Manager. I then started filling in for open sales territories too. I worked in the Temporary Learning Consultant role for about 10 years.

It was the perfect job for me. I worked part time and was able to be home for my kids after school. When my kids were older, I went back into sales full time taking a position as an Inside Learning Consultant for the Professional Skills team. Cengage Group allowed me to work from home in the Boston area for a team based in Kentucky. I am so grateful for this. Cengage Group has been so supportive and flexible with me.
